Carbon Footprint in Municipalities for Low Carbon City Project

Carbon Footprint 01012012

Thailand has realized the importance of Global Warming and the climate change, so it has participated in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change to solve these problems, a concept of “Low-carbon Society” has been introduced, with three key ideas: (1) Carbon Minimization: To be a society with practical processes or activities to reduce Greenhouse gases emission, (2) Simpler and Richer: Greenhouse gases reduction activities must be practical for daily life and generate income for the society, and (3) Co-Existing with Nature: The activities must be in harmony with nature and natural resources conservation. These ideas led to an area-based management or “Low-carbon City”, which is based on each city’s emission reduction.
Carbon Footprint for Organization (CFO) is an assessment of overall Greenhouse gases emission to determine an organization’s carbon footprint, which will lead to policies and strategies to successfully reduce Greenhouse gases emission as an organization, an industry, a city and a country as a whole. However, in Thailand, CFO is not widely recognized at the moment and most organizations are not informed about how to assess their carbon footprint. Moreover, there are no actions from the local authorities. Therefore, Thailand Greenhouse Gas Management Organization (Public Organization) has organized “Local Government Organizations Carbon Footprint Assessment Project to Become Low-carbon Cities”. The aim is to set guidelines for local authorities to assess their emissions from their own organization’s activities. This will enhance the potential of Thailand’s local bodies to manage their carbon emission and reduce it to become a low-carbon city eventually, setting a good example for other cities in Thailand and other countries in the world. Carbon Footprint Organization for Local Government is set up to determine each organization’s carbon emission in CO2 equivalent throughout the process, from procurement of raw materials, logistics and services to waste management as a result of the organization’s products and services. There are 4 local organizations as pioneers of this project.

    1. Ampawa Sub-district Municipality, Ampawa District, Samutsongkram Province
    2. Muang Klaeng Sub-district Municipality, Klaeng District, Rayong Province
    3. Sikew Municipality, Sikew District, Nakornratchasima Province
    4. Phuket Municipality, Muang District, Phuket
