Private sectors join hands with FIBO in developing Mod Boriraksa (FACO) : The FIBO Against COVID-19 Robotics Platform

Private sectors and Institute of FIeld roBOtics (FIBO), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT) intensely collaborate for the development of the medical robotics platform “Mod Boriraksa” (the Thai name granted by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn); formerly known as FACO: FIBO AGAINST COVID-19).

Mod Boriraksa (FACO) prototypes have been developed to lessen the tasks of healthcare personnel in taking care of COVID-19 patients as well as reducing direct contact with patients thus lowering the risk of contracting the coronavirus among healthcare workers during the outbreak in Thailand. There are three prototypes as follows:

(1) SOFA: a service robot for telemedicine. With the screen displaying the treatment record or diagnosis results which are connected with the hospital system, the physicians can remotely command SOFA robot from the centralized control center to travel to designated areas. SOFA is also equipped with a thermal camera to monitor patients’ temperature and a high definition magnifying camera which can magnify the object 20 times the original size allowing the doctors to check general physical condition of patients e.g. eyes and tongues – from a distance. In addition, SOFA has a videoconferencing system to enable both patients and physicians to make video calls to communicate with each other in real-time.

(2) CARVER-Cab: an autonomous mobile robot (AMR) specially designed for food and medical supplied delivery operating in COVID-19 inpatient wards. It is the first robot in CARVER Series which is an AMR system for hospital logistics. With LIDAR and 3D camera technologies, it can localize and navigate freely in Hospital wards. CARVER-Cab To improve efficiency on logistic process, the built-in cabinet is able to store 20 meal sets, so that it is able to serve the food for the entire ward in only few rounds. In addition, it is equipped with a Hydroxyl generator for air purifying and viral disinfecting to sanitize the hospital around the clock.

(3) Service Robot: the third type of robot is able to convey medicine and food to inpatients with special needs at specific locations. It has been designed to automatically travel to the target areas by remotely controlling from a centralized center. The patients can interact with the robot to communicate with doctors and nurses.

All robots are connected with the hospital WI-FI system. In the future, we plan to deploy 5G 2600 MHz technology as well as cloud computing via 5G using 26-28 GHz to fully leverage the capabilities of the robots.

The development of Mod Boriraksa (FACO)

Mod Borirak (FACO) has been developed in the mid of March 2020.

On April 7, 2020, the development team has tested and simulated the robotics and centralized control systems. As designed and carefully planned, the robots can perform designated takes without errors which has made us believe that they can provide a solution to an overwhelming number of COVID-19 patients and workload at the hospitals.

On April 8, 2020, the doctors and IT specialists from Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital and Police General Hospital joined the technical demonstration of Mod Boriraksa (FACO) to ensure the fit functional operation prior to its installation at the hospital.

After the demonstration, teams of the medical doctors and specialists expressed their satisfaction and appreciation on the impressive system platform that will provide vital assistance to the frontline healthcare personnel.

On May 5, 2020,  The first ‘Mod Boriraksa (FACO)’ robotics system premiered at the Ramathibodi Chakri Naruebodindra Hospital.
