Let’s send our best wishes to the Thai humanoid robot team, “TeamKMUTT,” from the Institute of Field Robotics (FIBO), King Mongkut’s University of Technology Thonburi (KMUTT), as they compete for victory in the WorldRobocup 2019, Humanoid League, held from July 2-8, 2019, in Sydney, Australia!
Humanoid robot football is considered one of the most challenging robot competitions. Participants must develop human-like robots capable of bipedal walking and possessing football game skills. The robots must operate autonomously without human control, be able to differentiate between teammates and opponents, and work collaboratively as a team using only on-board processing units, with no external processing. Humanoid robots are developed in terms of both hardware and software, all while adhering to limitations on the size and weight of the components the robot must carry.
In the Kid-sized Humanoid League, which TeamKMUTT will be participating in, robots must be humanoid in shape and stand between 40-90 centimeters tall. Developing humanoid robots is more complex than other types of robots because humanoids typically have around 20-22 motors at various joints for movement. The bipedal walking system is critical for humanoid robots, as they must maintain balance at all times, ensuring stability whether moving or stationary.
FIBO KMUTT has been developing humanoid robots to compete in the WorldRobocup Humanoid Kid-sized Leagues since 2012. The Humanoid League features three sub-leagues based on robot size, with each employing bipedal robots. A significant challenge for these robots is their ability to move and accurately kick the ball. While they cannot move as nimbly as humans, their capabilities in maintaining balance while walking and kicking, recognizing surrounding robots and the field, and executing team strategies and other technical features are improving year by year. The Humanoid League is expected to make a substantial contribution to the evolution of important technologies for the future development of humanoids.
Join us in sending good luck wishes to “TeamKMUTT” from FIBO KMUTT, Thailand, as they compete in the WorldRobocup 2019 in Sydney, Australia!
